The All American Red Heads

At a time when most women’s teams still played six-on-six, half-court basketball, the Red Heads played by men’s rules against men’s teams. Touring the country in a station wagon, and later a limousine, the Red Heads played 200 games during a seven-month season, exhibiting special ball-handling routines and trick shots. At the height of their popularity, they were featured in Life and Colliers and had a spin-off team called the Ozark Hillbillies. Unless a player was naturally redheaded, she was obligated to dye her hair upon joining the squad. The team continued to tour until 1986, though its popularity steadily diminished after 1973, when Title IX finally forced colleges to field women’s sports teams.

Paper size: 13" x 10" Archival UltraChrome print on fine art paper. Open edition, signed by the artist. Originally published in FreeDarko Presents: The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball History. Please allow two to three weeks for delivery
